21 refs. 99-104 HYDROPHILICITY AND SURFACE ENERGY OF POLYETHYLENE MODIFIED BY RADIATION GRAFTING OF ACRYLAMIDE Aliev R Mexico,Universidad Nacional Autonoma LDPE films were modified by gamma-radiation grafting of acrylamide from a 30 percent aqueous solution of acrylamide. The modification of the films was accompanied by changes in hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties and surface energy. Hydrophilicity of the films was characterised by immersing the films in distilled water at room temperature until equilibrium swelling was reached.

T-peel test, SEM, contact angle measurements, ATR IR spectroscopy and stress-strain experiments were used to analyse the nature of surface modifications produced in the rubber. The length of the treatment and the neutralisation procedure (with and without ammonium hydroxide) were considered. The treatment with sulphuric acid resulted in the sulphonation of the butadiene units of the rubber and the creation of highly conjugated C:C bonds, which produced a change in colour of the thermoplastic elastomers.
