To overcome this problem and to achieve greater accuracy, the researcher must resort to less direct methods. Leaning on social characteristics based on historical experience, the scholar may rely on family names, birthplace, the practice of certain customs, and close business or social ties.
Having created this subempire, Carvajal invited his extended family to join him. The terms of his contract with the crown did not require the customary proof of Old Christian lineage.
